The Collection

The Museum collects, by gift, bequest, purchase or loan, material that portrays the outstanding contribution made by British manufacturers in the development of the world's road transport industries. Particular reference is made to the significant role played by the City of Coventry and the Midlands area.

There are two prime collecting areas which :

Road Transport Collections

Motor cars, commercial vehicles, cycles, motorcycles, signs, engines, display material, accessories and other related material.

Archive Collections

Books, manuals, magazines, photographs, documents, films, videos, public relations pamphlets etc.


The Museum is guided by the Code of Practice on Archives for Museums in the United Kingdom in relation to the acquisition of printed ephemera and photographs etc., and will aim to meet the standards outlined in the 'Standards for Record Repositories' as published by the Royal Commission on historic manuscripts in 1990.

(ii) Acquisition Policy

  • a) All material is recorded in accordance with the procedures laid down by the Museum which comply with the Museum's Associations 'Code of Practice for Museum Authorities'.
  • b) The Museum will only acquire material for which it can provide effective curatorial care, through appropriate policies for conservation, preservation, maintenance and storage.
  • c) The Museum will only acquire material for which it can provide sufficient staffing to implement its stated responsibilities for all elements of its Collections Management Policy.
