Object of the Fortnight - Valentine's Day Special!

03 February 2011

As it's nearly Valentine's Day (and this week we've been clearing space in our loading bay for all the hundreds of flowers, chocolates and teddies which are sure to arrive for us on the 14th) we thought we would try to find the object in the Museum that most represents all that is warm and slushy about LOVE!

The list is long of course, because all the items we hold in the Museum were made with love, most were loved by their owners for many years, and all are loved by us now that they are in our care.

After a lot of discussion (and a bit of arguing) we finally concluded that the best object to be Valentine's Object of the Fortnight simply had to be this gorgeous 1972 Morris Post Office van.

There are a few reasons why we chose it:

* This example was one of the last of these light commercials specially built for use by the Post Office - and it was well loved by all staff.
* Before being generously donated to the Museum in 1979, this vehicle was totally restored with much love in the Post Office workshops
* and finally, the fact that really swayed the vote with staff at the Museum - over the course of its working life it must have delivered hundreds of love letters, parcels and of course Valentine cards - so we think it fully deserves to be Valentines Object of the Fortnight!

Do you think we made the right choice?  If you think there's another Valentine-worthy item in our collection, let us know on our Facebook page.
