Not sure what to do with your old surfboard?

The Museum of British Surfing is appealing for people in the Midlands to check their lofts, garages and garden sheds to see if they have any old surf kit they could donate to the new North Devon based charity.

The surf museum is showing part of its collection of old surfboards and memorabilia until the end of February at our Wheels and Waves exhibition.

"From the early 1900s people have been travelling from the communities around the Midlands to the North Devon and Cornwall coasts to go surfing - and we believe a lot of their old surfing equipment is probably stored away and forgotten about," said Peter Robinson, founder of the Europe's first surf museum opening in Braunton for the first time this April.  "Jimmy Dix for example was a Nuneaton dentist who wrote to Hawaii in the 1930s find out how to build a surfboard - to his surprise the Hawaiians sent him a 13 foot hollow wooden board in a crate!"

"I'm sure there are old wood boards, fibreglass surfboards, wetsuits, clothing, photos and films that would really help expand our collection and to make sure these items are preserved for future generations to enjoy, not just thrown away."

Many Midlands towns and universities have surf clubs, some dating back to the 1960s.

The Museum of British Surfing is a registered charity and its new exhibition venue has been part funded by Leader 4 Torridge & North Devon and North Devon Council.
