We're up for an 'Oscar'!

26 March 2012

The ‘Oscars’ of the museums world, The Museums & Heritage Awards for Excellence, have announced their shortlist for 2012, and Coventry Transport Museum has been named as a finalist for the ‘Classic Award’, which recognises museums that have been established for 10 years or more, and that exemplify continued growth, vibrancy, relevance and long term visitor interest.

The award judges were impressed by the way that staff at Coventry Transport Museum continuously strive for excellence in creating exciting and innovative temporary exhibitions to attract new visitors and encourage repeat visits to the Museum throughout the year, whilst also maintaining and conserving the very special permanent collection to an extremely high standard.

The judges also appreciated the Museum’s entrepreneurial spirit in developing new and creative income streams from conferencing and corporate events, catering and retailing, enabling the Museum to remain ‘free to enter’.

Gary Hall, Chief Executive at Coventry Transport Museum said:

“I am extremely proud of what my team and I have achieved at the Museum over the past five years and I am particularly thrilled that the Museums & Heritage Awards have recognised these achievements by including Coventry Transport Museum alongside the other first class attractions in this shortlist.  Well over 400,000 people come through our doors each year, for a whole variety of reasons - and all are surprised, delighted and inspired by what they experience while they are here.”

The Museum is also eligible for the ‘Readers’ Award for Favourite Museum or Heritage Attraction’ at the same event – this award is voted for by the public and you can cast your vote for Coventry Transport Museum by visiting http://bit.ly/GRBvy3 - please specify 'all exhibitions' in the 'Exhibition' field.

The award-winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony in London on 16th May.
