Freedom of the City of Coventry for HMS Diamond
16 October 2014
Wednesday 15th October was a double red letter day for us here at CTM.
Not only was it the 17th Anniversary of Thrust SSC's World Land Speed Record run at the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, USA, achieving a record breaking 763mph over the hallowed Measured Mile.
It was also the day we welcomed some of the crew of the Royal Navy's HMS Diamond to the Museum, as the Captain & Crew were awarded the Freedom of the City of Coventry by the Lord Mayor - Cllr. Hazel Noonan in a ceremony at the city's Council House followed by a reception at Coventry Cathedral.
The visiting party of HMS Diamond to the Museum were welcomed by Gary Hall, the CEO of Culture Coventry, and were treated to a guided tour of the Museum along with a trip on the Thrust SSC Simulator to celebrate the 17th Anniversary of SSC's fantastic achievement.
A great time was had by all, and we were delighted to host the visit of the party from HMS Diamond.
We wish the whole crew a safe and secure sailing when they put back to sea in a re-fitted HMS Diamond in 2015.
