Blue Coat School Pupils Give Us The Green Light

When Education staff at Coventry Transport Museum decided to develop a new activity session for secondary school pupils visiting the Museum, they called upon some real experts to help them – a group of pupils and staff from Blue Coat Secondary School in Coventry.

For several months, pupils have been working alongside the Museum’s Learning team to develop a new Schools activity on the theme of friction, and on Friday 6th July a group of Year 7 pupils from the school came to the Museum for a sneak preview of the activity before it becomes available for schools to book from September 2012 onwards.

Michael Spencer, Head of Physics at Blue Coat, suggested the pun-tastic name for the activity – ‘Tyred & Tested’, as it involves pupils studying a range of tyres on different vehicles within the Museum, comparing how well they are suited to the vehicle, and eventually designing their own model wheels to a simple design brief.

Naomi Wilcox and Kristen Sutton, Learning Development Officers at Coventry Transport Museum said:

“We already offer a wide range of activities for Primary Schools visiting the Museum, and these are extremely popular, bringing in hundreds of schools each year. However we also wanted to offer some interactive and engaging learning opportunities for Secondary Schools, to help teachers to bring STEM subjects to life for their pupils. Working with Blue Coat to develop one of these new sessions has meant that pupils and teachers have been involved at every stage of the process, and we can say with great confidence that this new activity has been well and truly ‘Tyred & Tested’ before it launches to schools in September.”

Tyred and Tested is available for teachers to book for groups of up to 30 pupils, from September 2012 onwards at Coventry Transport Museum, at a cost of £4 per pupil. This is just one of a range of new Secondary Schools Education Sessions being offered by the Museum, covering subjects including Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, History, Leisure & Tourism and Citizenship.
