For Ages 7-11
Join Coventry Transport Museum’s very first home-educator workshop series dedicated to developing STEM skills of your 7–11-year-old children.
Led by STEM expert Rob Bennett, each 2-hour session explores up to two STEM concepts and automotive innovations with fun hands-on, practical activities which include and introduce the use of tools, handling objects from our collection, bespoke design and construction material to innovate, make, explore, test and learn.
Throughout the course of completing the workshop series, your children will be working towards their CREST award – a scheme that encourages children to think and behave like scientists and future engineers: CREST Awards
The themes of the workshop series are:
Wednesday 4 September – Introduction to automotive design and prototyping.
Discovering automotive innovation through our collection and how the past may influence future designs.
Wednesday 11 September – Engineering for Speed.
Exploring aerodynamics and why our fastest vehicles are indeed the fastest.
Wednesday 18 September – Engineering for Safety.
The physics behind brakes, belts, airbags and crumple zones and why these safety features matter.
Wednesday 25 September – Engineering for Sustainability.
Exploring the possibilities of alternative energy to fuel our vehicles.
Wednesday 2 October – Engineering for Sustainability and Economy.
Delving deeper into the material our vehicles are made from – where do they come from, how sustainable are they really and what is the cost (financially and for our environment).
Wednesday 9 October – Engineering for Inclusion.
Considering the varying grades of physical abilities of people using transport and how we can make transport accessible and inclusive for all.
FAQ’s:
Can my child attend the workshop on their own?
Yes. While we are happy for you to attend the workshop with your child, all of our facilitators and workshop leads are DBS checked and your child will be in a safe space throughout the workshop. If you and your child choose to attend the workshop on their own, we kindly ask you to remain in the building for the duration of the workshop.
Can I bring a younger sibling, age 0-5?
Each Wednesday we are running our free Mini Museum Engineers play sessions which would be a perfect space for your youngest to engage with STEM concepts in a playful and explorative way – while your 7-11 year-old attends their own workshop.
What if I think my child of 5-6 or 11+ year old would be interested in the workshop?
We believe that you know your children best and will evaluate whether this workshop is the right fit for them. Our facilitators are specialists in making any content meaningful to each ability but do get in touch if you have questions about the content and resources that are used during the workshops.
