Coventry Transport Museum secures investment from the Garfield Weston Foundation

15 April 2013

It was announced today that Coventry Transport Museum has secured a grant of £224,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation, which will be used to equip a new learning space within the museum.   This grant is in addition to the £4.6m already secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to transform a number of galleries and visitor facilities at the museum, and enable the redevelopment of the city’s 12th Century Old Grammar School.

As part of this major development, a new learning space will be created, and the grant from the Garfield Weston Foundation will enable this space to be kitted out with a superb range of equipment and resources, to create a lively and inspiring learning environment.   The project aims to be completed by April 2015, and will mark the beginning of an innovative new learning programme, developed in partnership with local people.  This new programme aims to attract 30,000 people to participate in heritage, learning and community development activities, fostering a sense of local pride and promoting community cohesion.

Philippa Charles, Director of the Garfield Weston Foundation, said of the award:

“Our trustees are keen to support organisations producing high quality work that addresses a real need in their local area.  Coventry Transport Museum is at the heart of its community and celebrates the stories of a city often overlooked but one that is working hard to build a new profile.  The Foundation is delighted to play a role in this new development and we hope that the grant will enable many thousands of people to take part in innovative and enjoyable learning experiences at the museum for many years to come.”

Gary Hall, Chief Executive of Coventry Transport Museum said:

“Today’s news is a massive boost to our redevelopment project, and we are very grateful to the Trustees of the Garfield Weston Foundation for their generous donation.  This funding means that the world class museum that we intend to create over the next two years, will be complemented by an outstanding educational facility that will benefit local people of all ages, which has always been a key aim of this project.”
