WODEHOUSE IN WONDERLAND

The Albany Theatre

28 April 2023 to 29 April 2023 (19:30 - 16:20)

Description

P. G. Wodehouse, or Plum as he’s known to his near and dear, is trying to write the latest instalment of Jeeves and Wooster. However, a would-be biographer, his wife, his daughter, and even his two Pekingese have other ideas! Join the famous writer for marvellous tales and spectacular tunes! Hear stories of first meeting Jeeves, an addiction to soap operas, and why he wrote books that were ‘like musical comedies without music’. Listen to songs composed by Broadway legends with lyrics written by himself and be entertained with characters such as Lord Emsworth, Gussie Fink-Nottle and the squashily romantic Madeline Bassett. But beneath all the fun and laughter is there a darker story to be told? Based on the life and writings of P. G. Wodehouse, William Humble’s play set in the 1950s takes us into the author’s New York State home. Starring Robert Daws (Jeeves and Wooster, Poldark, The Royal, Rock and Chips, How the Other Half Loves), directed by Robin Herford and with songs by Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Ivor Novello.

Venue: The Albany Theatre

The Albany is proud of its home at the beautiful Art Deco theatre in the heart of Coventry and the new studio space staging inhouse and professional touring dance, drama, music and comedy productions. From exquisite professional ballet companies to fun-packed tribute acts, local community shows to spectacular OffBroadway hits, The Albany’s two theatres play host to dance, drama, music and comedy events both large and small. The beautiful Art Deco main house theatre is now joined by a brand-new studio space and the new foyer entrance into the spectacular building includes a bar, convivial meeting area and box office with plans to develop the space further to include a café and gallery. The theatre is now a thriving arts venue. Run as a charity by a professional core staff with assistance from a team of volunteers, the Arts for Life initiative has a burgeoning reputation for providing visitors and local communities alike with a flourishing theatre and music scene that promises to make a valued contribution to Coventry’s UK City of Culture status.
